Petition to Texas Land Commissioner regarding Montgomery County, Texas, boundary dispute, 1838 Feb.

Petition addressed to Texas Land Commissioner John P. Borden from Charles B. Stewart, W. M. Shepherd, B. B. Goodrich, William Rankin, James Gillespie, George Morrison, Joshua Robbins, John Baker, and Walter E. Baker, asking for reconsideration of Montgomery County's "lower boundary line". The Republic of Texas Congress established Montgomery County from Washington County in 1837. The petition asserts that a misstatement by A. D. Kennard when the bill was passed before Congress left land between Lake Creek and Spring Creek vacant and open to encroachment. The signers are appealing to Borden for official reconsideration of Montgomery County's boundary with Harrisburg County. Annotation on verso of second sheet notes that similar letter to Congress did not mention Kennard's name.
